| MONTREAL, Dec. 8 (UPI) -- Asian victims of a deadly cancer linked to asbestos exposure said they want the Canadian government to prohibit the expansion of an asbestos mine in Quebec. SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS The victims were part of a delegation that included rights activists and trade union representatives who traveled to Montreal to urge the government not to allow the Jeffrey Mine to expand, the Toronto Star reported Wednesday. An international consortium is ready to invest in the mine expansion provided there is a $58 million government loan guarantee. A decision on the loan guarantee has not been made. The mine expansion could keep Canada in the asbestos business for the next 20 years. The country currently exports some 150,000 tons of asbestos annually, a product that the Canadian Cancer Society said contributes to the death of 90,000 people each year. Omana George of India, where much of Quebec's asbestos ends up, said Tuesday people in her country have no idea how to use asbestos safely. They break it up, cut it, release the fibers, she said. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Related News Topics:
