CINCINNATI, June 29 (UPI) -- Dozens of paintings by Cincinnati artist Charley Harper, long thought lost, are set for exhibition after being discovered at the Ford Motor Co., his son says.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Brett Harper, 56, of Lebanon, Ohio, says 50 of more than 100 originals commissioned from his father by the automaker and found in Dearborn, Mich., will go on public display for the first time July 11 at the Fabulous Frames & Art Gallery in Montgomery, Ohio, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported Monday.

Harper's stylish and whimsical modernist illustrations appeared in hundreds of books, magazines and posters. One of his steadiest customers was Ford, which commissioned close to 500 pieces from Harper for its Ford Times magazine from 1948 to 1982. The artist died in 2007.

Brett Harper told the Enquirer a Ford consultant e-mailed him in February with the news that a vault of his father's paintings had been discovered as the company was working to downsize its art collection.

"It was very emotional for me. I had kind of a tear in my eye", Harper said. "I just remember how hard Dad worked on everything he did, and the long nights he spent out in his studio, which was not air-conditioned."
