ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Hyundai Motor Co. of South Korea joined rivals with a deal to take advantage of Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Co.'s massive recall troubles.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Hyundai said it would provide $1,000 rebates for Toyota trade-ins if the customer opted for either a Hyundai Sonata, Elantra or Elantra Touring, The Detroit News reported Friday.

Toyota has recalled millions of cars and suspended U.S. sales of eight popular models due to a problem with a sticking gas pedal.

Toyota said a spacer added to gas pedal linkages would solve the problem for 2.3 million of the recalls. The company did not say how quickly the fix could be installed, however.

The deal from Hyundai would last through Monday, the newspaper said.

The concept was simple enough. "Our dealers thought this would help in their sales effort", said Hyundai spokesman Chris Hosford.

General Motors Co. announced a plan to help shoehorn Toyota owners from what is sometimes fierce loyalty with the company. Chrysler Group said it was considering an incentive plan, while American Honda Motor Co. Executive Vice President John Mendel said "we will not react in a predatory way toward either Toyota or Toyota customers."
