NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A warship made with steel forged from the World Trade Center wreckage was setting sail for New York Tuesday and its commissioning ceremony, officials say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The bow of the USS New York was forged from 70 tons of steel sent to the Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding yard in Louisiana after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the twin towers.

The 684-foot ship, with an amphibious landing platform, was built to carry a 700-member Marine battalion. It is to be commissioned in New York Nov. 7 after a week-long layover in Norfolk, Va., the ship's new home port, Cmdr. Curtis Jones said.

Ship boatswain Manfred Tiedemann, 45, said the USS New York carries special meaning for him because his friend, firefighter Paul Gill, died in the terrorist attacks on the trade center, the New York Post reported.

"We've taken something that was done to hurt us and turned it into something that is going to benefit all of mankind, Tiedemann said of the ship.
