NEW YORK, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- Imported Chinese glass being used to build the new World Trade Center in New York has irked U.S. manufacturers, analysts say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The spat indicates previous tensions between U.S. companies and China over tires, steel and paper have now spread to glass, The Washington Post reported Sunday.

The WTC is using imported blast-proof glass windows after Chinese manufacturers underbid U.S. producers, drawing objections that the competition was unfair.

"This new tower is going to be made out of subsidized Chinese glass, putting factory workers out of their jobs in America", Scott Paul, director of the Alliance for American Manufacturing -- a partnership of the United Steelworkers and some manufacturers -- told the Post, which reported the Alliance has asked U.S. trade officials to address charges the Chinese government spends billions of dollars subsidizing the glass industry's energy costs.

Steven Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which is rebuilding the World Trade Center site, backed the move, saying, "It was a competitive bidding process, which is how we award all our contracts."

A Chinese spokesman on trade issues did not respond to requests for comment from the Post.
