GENEVA, Switzerland, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- China has not ruled out appealing a World Trade Organization finding against its restrictions on imports of U.S. films, a government spokesman said Thursday.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The WTO ruling Wednesday said China should open its markets and ease controls on the import of U.S. films, DVDs, music downloads and books, CNN reported. Both the United States and the European Union had filed a complaint in 2007 against these restrictions.

Expressing regret over the WTO ruling, Commerce Ministry spokesman Yao Jian said China has always fulfilled its obligations on market access, Xinhua news agency reported.

He said Chinese markets for publications, films and audio-visual products are "extremely open."

"China will seriously evaluate the panel's report and does not rule out the possibility of appealing the ruling", he said.

U.S. Trade Rep. Ron Kirk welcomed the WTO decision, saying it helps pave the way toward more open trade", CNN reported.

"These findings are an important step toward ensuring market access for legitimate U.S. products in the Chinese market, as well as ensuring market access for U.S. exporters and distributors of those products", he said.
