JACMEL, Haiti, Jan. 26 (UPI) -- With international focus on Port-au-Prince, rural Haitian earthquake victims have largely lacked relief help so far, observers say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

About 22 miles south of the Haitian capital are villages servicing sugar cane and banana plantations, where the locals have not had sufficient food or other provisions since the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake, Voice of America reported Monday.

Helicopters make their way to a nearby landing zone established by the U.S. Marines to bring in necessities, VOA said.

"We've learned that there are a lot of villages, people have lost everything, just fully destroyed, just camping out some of them under the stars. No one is giving aid to them. So our focus for the next five or six days is going to be working on the outlying areas", said Pat Brady of the charity Crisis Aid.

In Jacmel, an artist colony, old colonial buildings were heavily damaged.

"There were six people dead in that house over there. And three people in that house", a resident pointed out.

An artist said that in desperation he hurriedly made some pieces that ordinarily would have been sold to tourists.

"You know, I have three children. Now I don't have any help. I am trying to finish some of them. Because I think if I got them in my hand I could find someone to buy some of them", the artist said.
