NEW YORK, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- The declining quality of sets used by several major Broadway productions in New York hints at apparent financial cutbacks amid the recession, critics say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The New York Times said Sunday that major Broadway productions this season have faced criticism for the quality of their sets, leading critics to suggest production officials are cutting back on costs to save money.

Among the major musical productions that faced such criticism were "Bye Bye Birdie", "Finian's Rainbow", "Ragtime" and "A Little Night Music."

"La Cage" producer Sonia Friedman said while some productions are being forced to work under financial limitations, some productions find a way to still offer musical spectaculars.

"I do feel that intimate stagings of musicals like 'A Little Night Music' and 'La Cage aux Folles' are a smart, efficient economic model", Friedman told the Times. "I do not necessarily think they are the way things will always be done now or in the future. There is room for both."
