LOS ANGELES, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Judges with the Directors Guild of America said U.S. director Kathryn Bigelow earned best director honors for her film "The Hurt Locker."

The Los Angeles Times said Sunday that Bigelow, 58, was named best director of 2009 on Saturday night, marking the first time a woman has earned that DGA distinction.

"This is the most incredible moment of my life", Bigelow said of the cinematic honor.

"This is amazing. I'm so deeply stunned, honored and awed."

Other winners at the 62nd annual guild awards ceremony were the directors of "Mad Men", which earned top TV drama series honors, and HBO's "Taking Chance", which was named best TV movie of 2009.

The Times said the guild also honored Jason Winer for ABC's "Modern Family" with best TV comedy series honors, while offering top daytime serials kudos to Christopher Goutman for "As the World Turns."

The guild also bestowed a lifetime achievement award to Norman Jewison, director of such film as "Send Me No Flowers" and "The Cincinnati Kid."
