BERLIN, May 12 (UPI) -- Berlin's long-delayed Holocaust Memorial opened to the public Thursday amidst controversy about an organizer's plan to put a tooth in one of the pillars.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Lea Rosh announced Tuesday at the opening ceremony that she had found the tooth at the remains of the Belzec Concentration Camp. She said it would be accompanied by a yellow Star of David she was given by an Amsterdam woman whose mother died in a death camp.

Deutsche Welle reports that other Jewish leaders were outraged, saying that putting part of a dead body in the memorial would violate Jewish law. Rosh said she had consulted a rabbi who told her that only whole bodies or large body parts must be buried in a Jewish cemetery.

The memorial has already become controversial with critics saying that it focuses too much on the victims of the Holocaust and not on the crimes committed by their killers. A study and research center under the memorial now provides more information.
