MARCUS HOOK, Pa., May 18 (UPI) -- A fire at Sunoco's refinery at Marcus Hook, Pa., was contained Monday, a company spokesman said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Thomas Golembeski told The Philadelphia Inquirer that while the blaze that followed exoplosions was under control, it was still burning.

Golembeski said Sunoco would attempt to compensate for possible operations problems by increasing production at the company's other two regional refineries.

The exact impact on refinery operations as a result of the explosions and blaze had yet to be determined.

Golembeski said the Marcus Hook refinery's ethylene unit had been closed as a result of the fire but the remainder of the site was operational.

"People are still reporting to work here at the refinery", he said.

The Inquirer said the explosions before the fire apparently began in a small part of the refinery located in Claymont, Del., which is just south of the main refinery in Marcus Hook.

Reports said the chemical involved in the explosion was ethylene, a byproduct of oil refining used in plastics, the newspaper said.
