HERSHEY, Pa., Dec. 16 (UPI) -- U.S. researchers have linked insomnia symptoms in school children with medical complaints.

Researchers at the Pennsylvania State College of Medicine in Hershey said they have linked insomnia and medical complaints in children ages 5-12.

"The first and most important step in children with medical complaints and sleep disturbances would be an evaluation for underlying medical disorders and providing treatment", lead study author Dr. Ravi Singareddy said in a statement.

"If the associated sleep disturbances do not improve despite improvement in medical complaints the disturbances should be further assessed and treated."

Singareddy and colleagues studied 700 children and found 19 percent of the children had difficulties falling asleep or staying asleep. This insomnia was 3.3 times more likely to be reported by parents in children with gastrointestinal regurgitation and 2.3 times more likely in children with headaches.

The findings are published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine.
