PHILADELPHIA, April 9 (UPI) -- It will cost $4.3 million to repair water damage in the bell tower in Independence Hall in Philadelphia, National Park Service officials said Thursday.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Jane Cowley, a spokeswoman for the park service, said replacing wood siding that has been damaged by leaks is the major part of an overhaul of the tower, which once held the Liberty Bell, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Cowley said the Centennial Bell, cast for the 1876 anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, can remain in place during the work.

Charles Tonetti, the architect involved in the project, met with the Philadelphia Historic Commission to discuss the project Thursday. Cowley said the meetings are part of the procedure.

"We have great concern about protecting the historic nature of the tower, so we're not doing anything controversial", she said.

Independence Hall, built as the Pennsylvania Statehouse, is where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were voted on. The Second Continental Congress met there from 1776 to 1783.
