SUGAR GROVE, Pa., Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Thirty-four people were treated at hospitals after being exposed to carbon monoxide poisoning at a church near Sugar Grove, Pa., authorities said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Hessel Valley Lutheran Church was evacuated Sunday after people began falling ill during morning worship, the Erie (Pa.) Times and News reported Monday.

Most of the people were treated and released by Sunday night, parishioner Verne Ekdahl said.

The 9-year-old son of the Rev. Nancy Schwanke was one of four people taken to Pittsburgh for treatment. The boy and the three others were expected to recover after treatments to reduce the amount of carbon monoxide in their bodies, church officials said.

The church is heated with natural gas and a blockage in the chimney may have forced carbon monoxide back down into the building, said Ekdahl, president of church council.

The chimney and furnace at the church, built in 1880, was to be examined Monday.
