CANNES, France, May 6 (UPI) -- France will give show
business workers disputed unemployment pay to end their strike that
threatened next week's Cannes Film Festival.SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS
The French government pledged Wednesday almost $25 million
to pay unemployment benefits to the country's show business workers,
many of whom have been on strike since last summer because benefits
were drastically reduced, in an attempt to ensure the famous film
festival runs smoothly, BBC reported Thursday.
The government fund would make unemployment payouts over a
limited period to workers who clocked 507 hours over a 12-month
period.
Jean-Francois Pujol, deputy secretary general of the CGT's
arts branch, said the plan was a "provocation", adding, "One should
not be surprised if damage is done at next week's festivals", he
said.
A group of artists and technicians has planned an
"occupation committee" for the 11-day festival.
