FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- Multiple car crashes caused by snow and freezing temperatures have closed a major tourist road in Grand Canyon National Park, U.S. rangers said Wednesday.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Road crews were working to clear Desert View Drive of the accidents that started as a light snow began to fall Tuesday, the National Park Service announced.

At about 5 p.m., the Regional Communications Center received multiple calls reporting collisions and a rollover of a 15-passenger van on the road, also known as East Rim Drive.

Emergency crews arriving at the scene found a number of accidents involving about 40 vehicles. No serious injuries were reported, the park service said.

Desert View Drive is expected to re-open sometime Thursday, rangers said.

Winter driving conditions are expected to persist in the park, the park service says, with periodic snowstorms followed by daytime melting and nighttime freezing.
