MOSCOW, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- The Russian Defense Ministry Friday dismissed reports the wreckage of a Russian fighter jet had been found.

The Su-27 Flanker fighter jet on a scheduled flight Thursday and was about 13 miles from the Dzemga airbase when it fell off the radar, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported.

"At approximately 20 kilometers from Dzemga airbase Russian Defense Ministry rescue teams have discovered the apparent crash site of the Su-27 Flanker fighter jet in the Khabarovsk Territory", Alexei Kuznetsov said, adding "A crater ... has been found." A search for the wreckage continued Friday.

The Su-27 is a Mach-2 class aircraft designed as a competitor for Western fighters, such as the F-15 Eagle, RIA Novosti said.
