LONDON, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Britain's snowy winter has reduced road salt stocks to dangerously low levels, prompting crews to stop de-icing some highway shoulders, officials say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis ordered town councils to cut their use of salt on roads by 25 percent until Tuesday and stop using it on hard shoulders to save salt for higher priority main road surfaces, The Times of London reported Friday.

"It's now into nightmare territory", said Paul Watters, head of roads policy for the Automobile Association. "I think the greatest concern is that it's a manifestation of how little salt there is left -- and the supply chain is creaking at the seams."

There have been thefts of salt in Scotland and England because of the shortage.

"We are amazed and angry that someone would actually steal a grit bin", said Joe Devine, East Renfrewshire's council head of roads.

Police said the theft put people at danger, the newspaper said.

Forecasters see no quick letup of hard winter conditions, The Times said.
