ST. ANNA, Wis., Dec. 30 (UPI) -- A Wisconsin firefighter was killed and four others hurt when an explosion rocked a foundry, officials said Wednesday.

Calumet County, Wis., Sheriff Gerald Pagel said firefighters were responding to a Dumpster fire at Bremer Manufacturing near St. Anna, Wis., Tuesday night when it blew up, killing a 33-year-old firefighter whose identify wasn't immediately released, the Appleton (Wis.) Post-Crescent reported.

The newspaper said the victims' fellow firefighters gathered Wednesday at their station, flanked by two pumper trucks that had been riddled by shrapnel.

"A Dumpster that was burning blew up. That's all we know so far", St. Anna Fire Chief Bob Thome told the Post-Crescent.

Officials said a St. Anna firefighter who had initially been listed in critical condition at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, Wis., was upgraded to fair condition while three others sustained minor injuries.

"It just shook everything", Bill Braun, who lives about 500 feet from the blast, told the Post-Crescent. "Things fell off the wall. It just rocked the house. It was just a bad explosion."
