VACAVILLE, Calif., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Bird droppings are being blamed for the cave-in of a gas station awning in Vacaville, Calif., that barely missed a woman filling her tank, fire officials said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Vacaville local Chris Doss had just finished filling her car at Quick Way Gas about 2:20 p.m. Monday when part of the station's metal roof came crashing down under the load of inches of bird droppings, The Reporter said Wednesday.

"It just went 'boom' and then it all came down", Doss said.

Several members of the Vacaville Fire Department came and secured the area around the gas station.

Fire Battalion Chief Brian Moore said part of the collapsed roof had been brought down by the weight of accumulated pigeon droppings

"The center of the roof is open and the pigeons can just go in and out freely", Moore said.

He also expressed concern about the structural integrity of the rest of the roof, The Reporter said.

"It's definitely compromised", he said.

Doss said she felt lucky.

"I'm glad that I parked on that side", she said. "I should go get a lotto ticket."
