PERTH, Australia, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- Three Indonesian men charged in the fatal Christmas Island shipwreck last month appeared Tuesday in a court in Perth, Australia.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The three, reportedly in control of the boat that crashed onto the rocks and killed at least 50 people, were charged with human struggling, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Commonwealth prosecutors charge Abdul Rashid, 60; Hadi Han, 22; and Supriadi, 32, facilitated bringing 69 passengers to Australia in violation of the Migration Act.

Their lawyer said his clients were "very upset" about the tragedy, The Australian in Sydney reported.

Magistrate Joe Randazzo told the men they were accused of smuggling "about 69 Iraqi, Iranian and Kurdish people and (you) did so reckless as to whether the people had a lawful right to come to Australia."

So far 30 bodies have been recovered, but authorities said they believe many more were killed Dec. 15.

The men weren't required to enter a plea and were remanded into custody, ABC said.

Meanwhile, Christmas Island's emergency management committee and government accepted all eight recommendations offered by an internal Customs inquiry.

Brian Lacy, committee chairman and island administrator, said he especially liked plans to install additional rescue and surveillance equipment in the area.
