PROVIDENCE, R.I., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- Marshon Brooks led an outstanding performance at the free throw line Wednesday that lifted Providence to an 83-68 upset of No. 7 Villanova.

Brooks scored 20 points while making only 4-of-15 field goal attempts. He was 12-of-14 from the foul line, however, as part of an overall 31-of-38 showing by the Friars.

Providence took a nine-point lead at halftime and was in front by double digits for most of the second period. The Friars have won two in a row following a six-game skid.

Gerard Coleman added 16 for Providence (13-8, 2-6 Big East).

Villanova (17-3, 5-2) got 18 points from Maalik Wayns and 17 points to go with 15 rebounds from Antonio Pena.

The loss by the Wildcats leaves second-ranked Pittsburgh (7-1) as the only team in the Big East Conference with fewer than two league losses.
