SEATTLE, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Microsoft Corp. has acknowledged vulnerabilities in its Internet Explorer browser were exploited in the attack on Google Inc. in China.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Mike Reavey, director of the Microsoft Security Response Center, said the IE bug may have been implicated in "targeted and sophisticated attacks" on other companies, Computerworld reported. Google has said it believes hackers trying to get into the e-mail accounts of Chinese human rights activists may have targeted other Internet companies as well.

The version involved was IE6. Microsoft has been encouraging its customers to upgrade to IE8.

Experts wondered why Google wasn't using its own software.

"More interesting than the IE zero-day, is why wasn't Google running Chrome?" asked Andrew Storms, director of security operations at nCircle Network Security, referring to Google's own browser.

John Pescatore, a security expert for the information technology firm Gartner Inc., said most companies use multiple browsers.

"But it's almost impossible for IE6 not to start up at some point during the day", he said.
