ATLANTA, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Southeast Asian immigrants living in the United States need to know that amulets can be a source of lead poisoning in children, federal health officials say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, released Thursday, said the most common source of exposure for lead-poisoned U.S. children under the age of 6 is lead-based paint, but non-paint sources have been identified increasingly as the cause of lead poisoning -- particularly in immigrant communities.

Healthcare workers should consider traditional customs when seeking sources of lead exposure in Southeast Asian populations, federal health officials advise.

"Healthcare providers should ask parents about their use of amulets, especially Southeast Asian families and those with children with elevated blood lead levels", the report said.

"Lead poisoning in children is a preventable public health problem that can adversely affect the developing nervous system and result in learning and behavior problems."
