PYONGYANG, North Korea, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- North Korea will free an American held since Christmas for allegedly trespassing into the country, state media said Friday but didn't give the release date.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The official Korean Central News Agency said Robert Park, 28, an American missionary from Arizona, would be freed following an investigation that led the government to decide to "leniently forgive and release him."

China's Xinhua news agency quoting North Korea media said the decision was based on Park's "admission and sincere repentance of his wrongdoings." He was also quoted as saying he was taken in by "false" rumors "spread by the Western countries" and he was treated well in North Korea.

The BBC reported Park, a Korean-American from Tucson, entered North Korea on foot, walking across the frozen Tumen River. The report quoted South Korean activists supporting Park as saying he carried a letter urging North Korean leader Kim Jong Il to free political prisoners and improve human rights in the communist state.

There was no word on another American the North Koreans were reported holding late last month. A brief Jan. 28 KCNA report said only the American had trespassed into the country from the border with China and was under investigation.
