EUREKA, Calif., Feb. 4 (UPI) -- A strong earthquake off the North California coast shook the ground miles inland but caused no reported damage, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The quake measured 5.9 on the Richter scale, geologists said. The epicenter was reported to be 47 miles west southwest of Eureka, Calif., and 35 miles west northwest of Petrolia.

Jim Goltz of the California Emergency Management Agency said the quake appeared to be a late aftershock to a 6.5-magnitude quake in the same place Jan. 9, The Eureka Times-Standard reported. That quake has been blamed for about $10 million in damage.

Guy Urban of the West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, said the quake was too small to cause a damaging tsunami, the Redding Record Searchlight said.

"We don't really start getting concerned until they get into the 6.5 range", he added.

People as far inland as Shasta Lake felt the quake.
