STUART, Fla., Feb. 5 (UPI) -- A research scientist says young great white sharks may be the creatures responsible for a deadly shark attack in Martin County, Fla.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Scientist Grant Gilmore, who investigated a 1998 shark fatality, said by studying characteristics of the fatal attack this week, the exact species of shark responsible for the attack could be determined, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel said Thursday.

Officials said kiteboard surfer Stephen Howard Schafer, 38, died hours after Wednesday's shark attack near Stuart Beach as a result of bite wounds suffered in the incident.

The attack represented the first fatal shark attack in the county, based upon records that date back to 1882.

Gilmore, a scientist with Estuarine, Coastal and Ocean Science Inc., said Schafer's wounds could be compared to the characteristic bite patterns of certain species of sharks.

In addition, the type of sharks suspected of perpetrating the deadly attack could be limited by region and season.

"The only other species that gathers in abundance out there in the winter are the juvenile great white sharks", he told the Sun-Sentinel.
