SANTA ANA, Calif., Feb. 8 (UPI) -- A retired Boeing engineer convicted of supplying trade secrets to China must serve 15 years in prison, a California judge ruled Monday.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Dongfan "Greg" Chung, 73, of Orange, Calif., drew the sentence from U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney, who turned down the 74-year-old's pleas for leniency, the Orange County (Calif.) Register reported.

"Your honor, I'm not a spy. I'm only an ordinary man", said Chung, who appeared in handcuffs in a Santa Ana, Calif., courtroom. "Your honor, I beg your pardon to let me live with my family peacefully."

But the Register said Carney didn't comply.

"I do not know the full extent of how our national security was comprised", the judge reportedly said. "I don't think I ever will."

Assistant U.S. Attorney Greg Staples echoed those sentiments, saying, "Like terrorism or treason, this is a crime against the state."

Chung last year was found guilty of economic espionage, acting as an agent of the Chinese government and other charges related to the more than 30 years he worked for Boeing and Rockwell International.

Prosecutors said evidence in the case showed Chung, a naturalized U.S. citizen, as far back as 1979 was receiving requests from China's aviation industry for technical information from his employers.
