RIVIERA BEACH, Fla., Feb. 7 (UPI) -- A man was bitten by a shark in Riviera Beach, Fla., after he caught the wild animal and waded into the water to free it, an official says.

Riviera Beach spokeswoman Rose Anne Brown said Saturday's shark attack victim, whose identity was not released, apparently caught a 6-foot-shark at a local municipal beach and decided to release the animal, the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post reported.

Brown said when the man swam out to release the shark, he was bitten in the lower leg. Brown added the man spoke with investigators after Saturday's attack, but his exact condition was not detailed.

The exact type of shark involved in the attack remains unknown.

The shark attack in Riviera Beach comes in the wake of a deadly shark incident in Stuart, Fla.

Kiteboarder Stephen Schafer died Wednesday after being attacked by a shark while a quarter mile from shore. Area residents are concerned the shark purposefully attacked the man as opposed to accidentally injuring him while trying to feed on nearby fish, the Post said.
