WASHINGTON, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., says Republicans' plans to tamper with Social Security could end the program.

Schumer said Republicans favor allowing younger workers to take a third of their Social Security investment out of the federal system and put it into private accounts instead, and would like to turn Medicare into a voucher system.

"They 1/8Republicans3/8 want to privatize Social Security", Schumer told The Hill. "Privatize equals end -- no more."

House Republicans plan to detail their Medicare plan in the next few weeks, The Hill said.

In his State of the Union speech Tuesday, President Obama called for a bipartisan solution to strengthen Social Security for future generations.

"President Obama and Republicans agree on the need to reform Social Security to protect benefits for future generations", said Mike Steel, a spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio. "It seems like some of the president's Democratic allies on Capitol Hill haven't gotten the memo from the White House."

Thursday, Obama said the solution shouldn't be cutting benefits for future generations or subjecting them "to the whims of the stock market."
