WASHINGTON, Aug. 27 (UPI) -- Two conservative advocacy groups claim in a lawsuit the White House "unlawfully collected information" on U.S. healthcare reform opponents.

In the suit filed in U.S. District Court in Washington Thursday, the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons and the Coalition for Urban Renewal and Education said the Obama administration violated free speech and privacy rights when it persuaded people to e-mail the White House "fishy" misinformation about healthcare reform.

"The White House has 'unlawfully collected information on political speech,' thereby illegally using the power of the White House to chill opposition to its plans for healthcare reform", AAPS said in a statement.

AAPS and CURE demand the White House remove all information it has collected through the e-mails and be prohibited from collecting other "personal data."

The White House had begun its "rapid response" Aug. 4, it said, to counter what it called healthcare reform myths by getting people to e-mail misinformation. The administration has since discontinued the program.

AAPS actively opposes what it calls on its Web site "Obama Care." CURE says "a conservative agenda of traditional values, limited government, and private ownership is of greatest marginal benefit to low income peoples."
