COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Supporters of failed Sri Lankan presidential candidate Sarath Fonseka are claiming vote-counting fraud in their country's election.

The Australian newspaper The Age reported in its Saturday edition that Fonseka supporters are contesting the results after official returns gave President Mahinda Rajapaksa a majority in his re-election bid.

"There was a clear system to defraud the electorate", said a source, whose identity was not released.

Returns indicate the incumbent was favored among Sinhalese voters, Sri Lanka's majority ethnic group.

While the majority of voters from Sri Lanka's Tamil population voted against Rajapaksa, turnout among the ethnic group was low.

Jehan Parera, executive director of the National Peace Council of Sri Lanka, contested the election results, saying his country's electoral system greatly benefits the Sinhalese population.

"The problem in our country is that majority rule also translated into ethnic majority rule", he said of the Sinhalese, who represent nearly 75 percent of the Sri Lankan electorate.

Meanwhile, the European Union offered congratulations to Rajapaksa in a release Friday and offered to work with the president toward conciliation in Sri Lanka, where a years-long civil war against Tamil insurgents ended last year.
