CHICAGO, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Illinois Treasurer Alex Giannoulias won a hard-fought race Tuesday for the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate seat once held by President Obama.

Giannoulias will be running against U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk, who scored an easy victory in Tuesday's Republican primary. Kirk had almost 60 percent of the vote with most of the precincts reporting, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

On the Democratic side, Giannoulias defeated former Chicago Inspector General David Hoffman, with Urban League President Cheryle Jackson trailing.

Giannoulias had 39 percent of the vote to 34 percent for Hoffman with 86 percent of the precincts counted.

Sen. Roland Burris, who was appointed by former Gov. Rod Blagojevich to fill Obama's remaining term, decided against running for the seat.

"The people of Illinois now see the arrogance of a one-party state", Kirk said. "And this election will show we will not surrender to their dangerous cynicism of low expectations. Because we are Americans and we can do anything."

Both Democratic and Republican gubernatorial primaries remained too close to call, the Sun-Times said.

Cold and snow kept voter turnout low in the nation's first 2010 primary, which has been closely watched nationwide.
