PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Czech Defense Minister Martin Bartak said Monday the government approved sending an additional 55 troops to Afghanistan.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Bartak told the Czech news agency CTK that 15 of the new troops will be used to train police in Afghanistan, while the remaining 40 soldiers will help protect a Polish base in Afghanistan's Ghazni Province.

The minister said the troops headed to Afghanistan will not be part of combat units, but will be part of logistic, protective and training teams.

Monday's decision by the Czech government follows a decision by the Chamber of Deputies that granted the deployment of as many as 535 soldiers to Afghanistan in 2010.

Any attempts for additional Czech soldiers dispatched to Afghanistan would have to be approved by the Czech Parliament, CTK reported.

Prior to the plans for a troop increase in the war-torn country, Bartak said any troop increases might be met with a decrease in Czech troops stationed in Kosovo.
