HONOLULU, Jan. 31 (UPI) -- The Republican Party is struggling over ideology and tactics even as Democrats present it with an important opportunity, The New York Times reported Sunday.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Citing views of participants of last week's Republican National Committee winter meeting in Hawaii, the newspaper said concerns were voiced that the opening offered the party by voter dissatisfaction over the direction President Barack Obama is taking the country heading into this year's midterm elections may not be grasped because of internal GOP disagreements.

The newspaper quoted party leaders as saying there's an absence of strong figures to lead Republicans back to power on all levels, from the party chairman to prospective presidential candidates.

It said the GOP's strategy of attempting to block Obama's initiatives at every turn may score political points with its conservative base but leaves it open to being portrayed as the "party of no."

"We have the wind at our back", Katon Dawson, the former chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party, told the Times. "We just have to find our momentum."
