ABUJA, Nigeria, Jan. 30 (UPI) -- The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta rebel group in Nigeria said Saturday it will attack oil industry targets after ending a cease-fire.

The Times of Nigeria reported the rebels officially called off the unilateral cease-fire it declared last October and is preparing to conduct attacks to force the government to reconsider control of Niger Delta resources.

"It is sufficiently clear at this point in time that the government of Nigeria has no intentions of considering the demands made by this group for the control of the resources and land of the Niger Delta to be reverted to the rightful owners, the people of the Niger Delta", MEND officials said.

MEND officials claimed the Nigerian government was attempting to divide residents of the Niger Delta by offering stakes in oil ventures there.
