CHICAGO, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn has made at least $24,000 in interest from a campaign fund he controls from his 1996 U.S. Senate run, documents indicate.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Quinn, 61, who next week faces a Democratic primary election for his governor's post, is still raising money for the long-ago quest for the Senate, The Chicago Tribune reported Wednesday.

The newspaper said documents filed with the Federal Election Commission show that Quinn has poured $53,650 in personal loans into the campaign fund, later soliciting political donations so he can pay himself back at interest rates approaching 10 percent.

Quinn spokeswoman Elizabeth Austin told the newspaper that the governor first began giving loans to the fund in 1996 and at that time believed federal law required him to be paid back in full with interest, but an FEC official said there are no such requirements.

The Tribune reported Austin saying Quinn's aides consulted with the elections commission after the newspaper raised the issue and found that Quinn's fund did not have to pay him interest.

While federal election law reportedly bars candidates from converting campaign contributions to personal use, it does permit candidates to be repaid for loans they make to their campaigns.
