WASHINGTON, Jan. 23 (UPI) -- The Obama administration has opened reams of U.S. government documents to the public as part of its Open Government Initiative.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The first data sets under the initiative were released Friday in what President Barack Obama called a follow-through on "a commitment to creating an unprecedented level of transparency and public participation in government."

Among the information published on the Web site data.gov was U.S. Department of Transportation data about the ease of use for child safety seats, which though already available, has now been put in "user-friendly" formats.

Also, the Health and Human Services Department published information that previously cost $100 to acquire, including detailed breakdowns on the volume of physician services delivered to Medicare beneficiaries and the payments for those services, with information sortable by state and type of medical service provided.

As part of the initiative, the U.S. Justice Department says data sets it has made available include statistics on crime victims, information about compensation for radiation victims and final reports from federal bankruptcy trustees.

"We are committed to achieving the president's goal of making this the most transparent administration in history", Associate Attorney General Tom Perrelli said.
