ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- Pakistan's government has filed a review petition against the Supreme Court's move to overturn amnesty granted to politicians, officials said Saturday.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The verdict found the National Reconciliation Ordinance to be illegal, clearing the way for the reopening of criminal and corruption cases against several Pakistani politicians, including President Asif Ali Zardari, the English-language Pakistani newspaper Dawn reported.

The government-appointed advocate on record, Raja Abdul Ghafoor, had until Jan. 16 to meet a deadline to file a review petition against the verdict's short order, the newspaper said.

National Accountability Bureau Chairman Naveed Ahsan would also be filing a review petition, Dawn reported.

The 17-member Supreme Court declared the NRO unconstitutional and illegal Dec. 17, throwing the country into a political crisis. The NRO was issued in 2007 by former President Pervez Musharraf, granting amnesty to politicians who were accused of corruption and other crimes between 1986 and 1999.
