The Hartford Courant, Connecticut Feb. 1--NEW HAVEN -- The judge in the trial of Cheshire home-invasion suspect Steven Hayes on Monday morning suspended jury selection at least through Tuesday because of a weekend incident that sent the suspect to a hospital intensive-care unit.

"It's certainly very clear we can't have jury selection today and tomorrow. After that, we just don't know", Judge Jon C. Blue said in Superior Court.

Blue and attorneys will meet again Wednesday morning to discuss the status of the case.

Blue said he received a call Sunday from Public Defender Thomas J. Ullman telling him that Hayes had some type of medical emergency, was found unconscious in his cell, and may have been be in a medically induced coma.

Ullman on Monday did not disclose how he heard of the Hayes incident.

Sources said Hayes apparently overdosed on medication he receives daily.

Attorneys on both sides told the judge they knew very little about Hayes' condition.

In fact, Ullman said, as a result of a gag order in the case and patient-privacy laws, both the prisons system and the University of Connecticut Medical Center in Farmington were not providing him with information. "Everyone is applying 1/8confidentiality policies3/8 to myself and to my defense team as well", he said.

Ullman did confirm that Hayes is in the intensive care unit at UConn Medical Center in Farmington.

Ullman said he planned to file a complaint with state police about media leaks concerning the incident. He said that neither the state Department of Correction nor the UConn Medical Center authorized the release of any information.

"It's disturbing to me. I hope the state police will investigate", Ullman said.

Jury selection in the case began Jan. 19. So far, four jurors have been selected.

Hayes is one of two men charged in the July 23, 2007, killings of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters, Hayley, 17, and Michaela, 11.
