Wes Benedict, executive director of the Libertarian National Committee, said in a news release the president's call for reduced government spending ignored the expense of fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as government entitlement programs.

"The president promised big government in the past, and he delivered", Benedict said. "I expect more of the same."

Benedict said the official Republican response, delivered by Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., danced around the edges of slashing Social Security and other major programs.

"Republicans don't want to cut spending -- they want to talk about cutting spending", Benedict said. "Congressman Paul Ryan is a perfect example of why Republicans are bad for America."
