BUDAPEST, Hungary, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Laszlo Solyom on Friday took office as president of Hungary.

The new president is a former chief justice at the constitutional court, while the post is largely ceremonial, the president can veto legislation.

That may come in handy since Solyom serves as an opposition president who narrowly won the vote in June after three election stages in the parliament. He beat Katalin Szili of the ruling Socialists, who was blocked by the government's coalition partners.

Solyom, 63, succeeds Ference Madl, a popular leader who helped Hungary enter the European Union but who had refused to be nominated for the second term, the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported Friday.
