WELLINGTON, New Zealand, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- New Zealand Prime Minister John Key says he has asked the United States to help his country limit Japanese whaling in Antarctica.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Key said he will discuss the whaling issue with U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her New Zealand visit this week in order to obtain U.S. support of New Zealand's attempts to end Japan's annual Southern Ocean whale hunt, The Dominion Post reported in its Thursday edition.

"New Zealand has been working very hard to try and find a diplomatic solution to the whaling issue. There is going to be an International Whaling Commission meeting in Honolulu in the latter part of January, so this will be our last chance to voice our perspectives on that meeting when we see Secretary Clinton", the prime minister said.

Key and Clinton are expected to meet Thursday in Auckland, New Zealand.

Japan's whaling hunt in Antarctica is allowed under International Whaling Commission regulations, despite claims the hunt is a commercial operation and not focused on scientific purposes.
