ATHENS, Greece, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Border authorities in Bulgaria and Greece said the Iliden checkpoint opened Thursday and the Ormenio border checkpoint was scheduled to open as well.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Bulgarian Border Police representative Lora Lyubenova confirmed the Iliden checkpoint officially opened Thursday, while Greek border authorities received information the blockade a the Ormenio site is set to be lifted, the FOCUS News Agency reported.

The openings of the checkpoints come a day after Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou announced the government's willingness to negotiate with farmers regarding roadblocks of major trade routes.

"The government is open to dialogue if that is what the farmers want as well", Papandreou said Wednesday.

Farmers have created more than 30 roadblocks, including several along the borders of Greece, in an attempt to get authorities to capitulate to their financial demands including guaranteed retail pricing and assured subsidies.

The Sofia News Agency said the blockades along the Greece-Bulgarian border have already cost Bulgarian firms nearly $56 million based on reports from those firms.
