TEHRAN, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Five people arrested during Iranian protests on the Shiite holy day Ashura could face execution if they are convicted of waging war on God, officials said.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

The Iran Labor News Agency, a semi-official media outlet, reported the five are to be tried for Moharebe, CNN reported. The crime encompasses waging war on God.

ILNA said Thursday the five will be tried "soon" with their confessions and the results of official investigation considered as evidence.

"The judiciary will severely confront those people based on the law", officials said.

Large protests have targeted the Iranian government since the disputed presidential election in June. While President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was declared the winner, supporters of Mir Hossein Mousavi and other critics say it was fraudulent.

On Ashura, Dec. 27, thousands of people took to the streets. At least seven people were killed in violence that accompanied the protest and government response to it.

The government blames the protesters for all acts of violence.

Abbas Jafari-Dolatabadi, prosecutor for the Public and Revolution Courts, said those who violated Ashura "by setting fire to public property and other similar crimes" were involved in actions equivalent to Moharebe, ILNA said.
