Local West Palm Beach, Fla. news station WPBF-25 is reporting that Stephen Howard Schafer, 38 years old, of Stuart, Fla. was spotted by a lifeguard about 4:15 p.m. seemingly in distress, clinging to his board in an unguarded area south of Stuart Beach.

The lifeguard paddled out to Schafer on a rescue board, pulled him from a ring of circling sharks and paddled him back to shore.

Schafer died at a local hospital.

According to WPBF-25 news, Florida is considered shark bite capital of world.

"In the last 100 years, Volusia County has seen 231 shark attacks. There have been 96 shark attacks in Brevard County and 58 in Palm Beach County over the last century. In Martin County, where the most recent attack occurred, there have been 27 incidents.

"The last fatal attack was in 2005, when Jamie Marie Daigle, 14, was killed by a bull shark while playing with a friend on boogie boards about 200 yards off-shore in Walton County", the news web site reports. Witnesses estimated that shark was about 6 to 8 feet long."
