PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti, Feb. 6 (UPI) -- Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said the Haitian government must recuperate or face possible influence from outside forces.

The Wall Street Journal said Friday the comments from the 52-year-old Haitian leader come as government officials in Haiti are attempting to balance long-term development plans for their country with the needs of their people following the Jan. 12 earthquake.

Bellerive said with foreign governments offering aid to Haiti following the natural disaster, he and his fellow officials must be careful not to lose control of their developmental plans.

"We must act quickly to put forward our own vision for Haiti, or else foreigners will impose their own", the prime minister offered at a Cabinet meeting this week, the Journal reported.

Bellerive said among the key actions needed is to assure the Haitian public that last month's deadly earthquake did not create a political vacuum in the government.

"We must find ways to reach out to the population", he said.

The Journal said in addition to dealing with the struggles of the government and their people, most Haitian officials are also struggling with having lost relatives and loved ones during the quake.
