BUENOS AIRES, June 27 (UPI) -- Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner is facing a tough test of her ability to govern the country with this weekend's elections, analysts say.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Fernandez de Kirchner, who has been in office since 2003, has had the luxury of working with fellow Peronist majorities in the country's lower house as well as its Senate, but polls indicate they may well lose those majorities in Sunday's balloting, CNN reported.

Fernandez de Kirchner's husband and predecessor as president, Nestor Kirchner, is running for a Buenos Aires deputy's seat in the lower house, leading the slate of Peronist candidates for half of the seats in Argentina's lower house of Congress (127 of 257 seats) and one-third of the Senate posts (24 of 72). How he fares will say much about Fernandez de Kirchner's future ability to govern, analysts say.

"A (Nestor) Kirchner loss is a catastrophe for the government, regardless of the outcome in the rest of the country", CNN quoted Daniel Kerner of the Eurasia Group, as writing in a report. He said if the former president loses his legislative bid, it would be clear "the couple's ability to be competitive in national elections has disappeared."
