SEOUL, Feb. 7 (UPI) -- A Chinese envoy met with a top North Korean official amid speculation Beijing would urge Pyongyang to rejoin nuclear disarmament talks, authorities said Sunday.

Wang Jiarui, head of the Chinese Communist Party's International Department, arrived in Pyongyang Saturday for a four-day visit.

He met with Kim Yong-il, director of the international affairs department of the Workers' Party, at a reception where participants toasted the "continuous strengthening" of ties between the two countries, the state-run North Korean Central Broadcasting Station reported.

Wang was also expected to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-il and deliver a message from Chinese President Hu Jintao urging North Korea's return to six-nation atomic disarmament talks, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported Sunday.

North Korea quit the talks in April after the U.N. Security Council sanctioned North Korea for nuclear and missile tests. The talks with South Korea, the United States, Japan, China and Russia aimed to convince North Korea to dismantle all nuclear operations.

In a meeting last year, Kim Jong-il told visiting Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao his country would consider rejoining the negotiations.
