PESHAWAR, Pakistan, June 12 (UPI) -- Violence hit Peshawar, Pakistan, Thursday with casualties reported, two days after a huge explosion at the city's Pearl Continental Hotel killed at least 16.

SAVE MONEY ON TRAVEL DEALS

Thursday's incidents began with a hand grenade attack at a police mobile post guarding the Ring Road, set up after Tuesday's hotel blast, the state-run Associated Press of Pakistan reported.

A suicide bomber then entered the crowd which had gathered, setting off an explosion and killing himself, the news agency said, quoting a police official. The report said at least 12 persons, including eight policemen, sustained critical injuries in the grenade and suicide bombing attacks.

Later, militants opened fire near the residence of the region's military commander but security forces fired back, killing two attackers and injuring one more, Geo TV reported. Authorities also arrested seven others, the report said.

Peshawar is the capital of Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province, which has been mired in deadly violence for weeks as the military battles Taliban militants.

The offensive began after the Taliban violated a deal that allowed for Sharia law in the region in exchange for peace.

Separately, Dawn newspaper reported at least 47 people, including several militants and a cleric, died Thursday when military gunships fired on suspected militant camps and seminaries in the Hangu district.

The killing of the religious leader and others has enraged local people and raised concerns of retaliation, the Dawn report said. Policemen remained confined to their stations, it said.
